I’m back with an interview style post today. Earlier this year I connected with Karyn Lee-Garcia via an online entrepreneur community and decided to co-hosted an Instagram contest and have stay connected ever since. Karyn is a wife, mother, Prana Flow® Yoga Instructor and Essential Oil Educator focused on natural wellness solutions for yogis, mothers & natural hair lovers.

When did you start your natural hair journey and why?

My natural hair journey started in 2001. I big chopped my hair after moving to Los Angeles. My hair was relaxed and became severely damaged after frequent ocean swimming trips. So, I chopped my hair and had no idea what to do with my natural hair until 2011.

During that time, I used tons of products and dabbled with including the essential oils of lavender and rosemary along with a few carrier oils. Ultimately, I had no idea what I was doing.

In 2011, I adopted my entire hair regime off the online YouTube natural hair guru, Natural85, and my hair life changed. A lot of her recipes included essential oils which I purchased from either Whole Foods or health food stores. I learned of the importance of essential oils but really only experienced a significant difference when I started using doTERRA essential oils.

Why do you recommend using essential oils on natural hair?

I recommend essential oils with natural hair care as they naturally nourish, strengthen and protect. My go-to essentials oils are rosemary (supports hair loss & breakage), lavender (sedative qualities & smells amazing), cedarwood (dandruff/eczema) & geranium (dry hair). However, there are a ton of other oils to use for natural hair care.

For hair, essential oils can be applied directly either neat (with no carrier oil) and with a carrier oil (if a sensitive scalp concerns you). I typically include essential oils in my DIY shea butters, conditioners & flax seed gel. The best carrier oils are coconut, jojoba, olive oil, avocado, argan, rosehip and so many more.

How do you suggest incorporating essential oils as a lifestyle?

For physical and emotional support, there are a vast range of single oils and blends to utilize. Personally, I start my day with a drop or two of lemon oil in water to naturally detox my system. Then, I anoint myself with the Balance blend and Frankincense as I start my work day and/or drop off my daughter to school. In the evening, I use Serenity to calm myself and sometimes my daughter down for a restful sleep. There are other oil blends to support the respiratory system and immune support. Consistency is the key when using essential oils. I typically use 6-10 different oils throughout the day either topically (on skin), internally (only a few essential oil brands can be used this way) and via a mist diffuser (aromatically).

How can people connect to you?

For more information and/or work with me one-on-one, I offer a free 20-minute Wellness Consultation for those interested in incorporating essential oils into their natural hair care regime and for their overall lifestyle. My sessions can take place over the phone or via video chat. During each session, we determine a few essential oil samples for each client. I personally mail them and then we follow-up with a longer, in-depth ‘Essential Oil Experience’ session.
