I first learned of EverButter at, ‘Embrace The Natural YouNatural Hair, Health & Beauty Expo last year. The Co-found Kummbareh Owens taught a session on hair care for children. In December 2015, I had the opportunity to try the Buttermint Smoothie Moisturizing Creme and was very pleased. I’m not sure why it took me so long to purchase the full line. The only item that was missing from this box was a scalp oil; however, EverButter has a Spring Sensation that can be purchased separately. Photo Credit: NaturallyACT

Hair Butter is my absolute favorite item in this box. My hair looks and feels so amazing. The moisture retention in this product is next level. Genesis hair butter locs in all the goodness from the moisturizing cream making my hair shine. My hair tends to be very dry and look ashy (yes my hair looks ashy sometimes) yet this butter leaves my hair shiny but not greasy #LOVE. Photo Credit: Everbutter

The EverButter Love box

This line has everything needed to feed your hair, keep it feeling and looking amazing! My hair tends to be on the dry side naturally; however, the right products can make a world of difference. The Love Box comes in 3 sizes: small, large, and extra large and the price ranges from $25.00 – $105.00. As a blogger I am constantly investing and/or have products sent to me to try, so I chose to get the small Love Box. I should have gotten the large box. Photo Credit: NaturallyACT

INHMD – International Natural Hair Meetup Day {Benton Harbor, Michigan}

IMG_2693On Saturday, May 21, 2016 I attended International Natural Hair Meetup Day (INHMD). Hosted by Serenity’s Hair (Dashuna Broyles) in Benton Harbor, Michigan. INHMD is an annual one-day event where women gather in over 50 cities, in 5 countries, spanning over 4 continents, all on the same day. This year’s event was presented by made beautiful-logo (the title sponsor).

INHMD purpose is to allow the opportunity for women across the country to meet in their own communities while networking, sharing, and meeting (virtually) other women across the country participating in meet-ups on the same day.

Sereniy HairjpgDashuna Broyles of Serenity’s Hair hosted the Michigan  location in Benton Harbor.  She did a wonderful job with this meet-up. The focus for this event included: length and moisture retention, heat-free and protective styling, and showcase hair products and styling tools to assist with your future styling needs.

INHMD CaresOne of the event highlight was INHMD Cares a philanthropic initiative that focused on Heart Health/Disease Awareness and Blessing Bags for the Homeless. Dashuna talked about the importance of heart health. Attendees also had the opportunity to either donate financial when purchasing ticket or bring travel size toiletries to be given to a local homeless shelter.

Doors opened at 5:00pm with an hour of mix and mingle, attendees also had the opportunity network with other naturals, shop with local vendors and have refreshments. The formal program began around 6:00pm with an icebreaker, more vendor shopping, the Panel Discussion included Josephine White, Betty Fudge-Fisher, Shanequa Kemp, and Mona Banks, a Live Music Performance featuring Yolanda Lavender. Every attendee received a Swag Bags and there were lots of fun raffles.

PS. Congrats Dashuna on your recent engagement!!

How I maintained my Flat Ironed Type 4 Natural Hair

IMG_1351 (1)I don’t flat-iron my hair often, usually only once a year, mainly because I like the texture of my hair when it’s not straighten. A few benefits of flat-ironing is being able to see the ‘true length’ of your hair. Straightening your hair can also add versatility in your styling routine.

A few disadvantages of flat-ironing natural hair is that it may not revert back to your curls or kinky/coily hair as quickly. Also, it may be hard to maintain straighten hair during working-outs or when it rains. As a result, many naturals find that their flat ironed hair only lasts for a very short time. Here are a few ways I kept my type 4 hair straight for two weeks, now I could have kept it straight longer; however, I just wanted my kinky/coily hair back.

First Things First – Go To A Professional

Salon Visit

Yes! I suggest getting your hair done by a licensed professional. Many naturals are comfortable with doing there own hair; however, I believe it’s best in these circumstances. The concern with going to a professional is trust, especially with all the articles about salons and stylist sneaking relaxers in on clients shampoo. However, the results of having your hair flat-ironed by a professional will be a lot better.

Now if you are having a hard time finding a stylist you trust, or cannot afford to go to a salon. I suggest investing in a good professional flat iron, make sure it has heat control settings.

Preserving Your Flat-Ironed Hair

Some naturals like to wrap their to there hair; however, when I do this I found that my hair has no bounce it just lays flat. Personally, I do not enjoy when my hair just lays flat. To keep my hair straight with a added curls and no heat, I use flexirods and curlformers. I love how using these tools help keep my hair straight with some bounce, while adding loose waves for a full look.

Minimal Product Use

Kinky/coily type 4 hair requires lots and lots of moisture, I tend to use creams, butters, steam and oil. When my hair is straight using butters weighs it down and creams make it revert back to kinky/coils. In place of heavy products, I like to use light oils light oils such as grapeseed oil, jojoba oil, or sweet almond oil. I lightly coat my hands with oil and apply to my hair daily. Doing this helps prevent dryness without weighing the hair down my hair.

Flexirods Pictured Flexirods_2

Another important factor to maintaining straight hair for an extended period of time is how you protect your hair when you sleep. Be sure to keep your hair protected while you sleep, use a satin/silk bonnet t or sleep on a satin/silk pillowcase.

Rain & Steam/Humidity

When my hair is in its natural state, I don’t worry about rain and humidity. The day I had my hair straightened it rain and rain. I kept a disposable shower cap in my bag and my umbrella to avoid the rain.  I usually don’t wear a shower cap; however, with straight hair is necessary.

Perserve With Ponytal

Working Out

Doing low intensity workouts will help minimize sweating be sure to use a sweatband during workouts. Sweatbands are a great way to keep your edges flat be sure your hair is completely dry before removing, if needed you can use handheld blow dryer on low cool-heat to make the process faster.

If you really want to get the most out of your flat-ironed, hair I suggest not to hang out at the pool or to the beach. If you do be sure to pin your hair up this will help extend the quality for your straighten hair.

Straight w Curls

Additional Info and suggestion :

I suggest using a Dri Sweat Edge Women’s Headband or Save Your Do Black GymWrap while working out to make your hair last. I don’t suggest strengthening your hair in the middle of summer when it’s most humid outside also when it’s hot you may be prone to sweat.

  • Moisturizing Avocado Hair Milk ($15.99)
  • Mint Almond Oil ($13.99)

Mielle Organics Healthy Hair Formula Vitamins ($18.99)

Mielle Organics Healthy Hair Formula VitaminsVitamins are a critical factor in supporting hair growth internally. These pills include: Vitamin B1 & 2, Niacin (Vitamin B3), Vitamin C, Vitamin E, Vitamin, Biotin, Copper, Folic Acid, MSM, Niacin, Pantothenic Acid, and Zinc. That promote healthier, stronger, longer, thicker hair. I have not tried the Vitamins yet due to currently taking a multivitamin. Once I have completed this dosage I’ll give these a try. *Photo Credit: curlBox.com/box-breakdown

Mielle Organics Detangling Co-Wash ($13.99)

Mielle Organics Detangling Co-WashAs a natural in the 4C category, it’s imperative to find a good detangler. One that not only makes it easy to use but actually works. This is good stuff, it’s a little lighter than I’d prefer. I tend to like my cream cleanser to be super think. My other detangler is awesome; however, this detangling co-wash is good. I love the fact that this is created to be used during the wash process, and helps prevent knots and tangles. (4-Stars) *Photo Credit: curlBox.com/box-breakdown

Mielle Organics Moisturizing Avocado Hair Milk ($15.99)

Mielle Organics Moisturizing Avocado Hair MilkMy hair tends to be dry so I like to use a mix of creams and butters to lock in moisture. Avocado is known to add hydration and moisture to dry, thirsty hair and that’s just what this product did. I used the milk as a style refresher and my hair felt extremely hydrated and moisturized. Mielle Organics Mint Almond Oil  ($13.99)

Mielle Organics Mint Almond OilI was skeptical of this oil only because I have a nut allergy. However, I tested on the back of my hand and didn’t break into hives. I really like this Mint Almond oil, it may be a little strong for some; however, I found the oil to be very refreshing. I used it with my scalp invigorator and my scalp felt so good, well stimulated and worked a sealant for my strands. My scalp never felt dry. (4-Stars) *Photo Credit: curlBox.com/box-breakdown

Curlformers on Natural 4B/4CHair

I like to use Curlformers to stretch my hair without using heat. (I do on rare occasion use minimum heat with my blow-dryer.) When I first used Curlformers the application/installation was a little challenging however once i got the first few in, it was pretty easy.

REALISTIC EXPECTATIONS

At my workshop Curly Conversation I talked about why its necessary  to do your research before purchasing any products or tools don’t just go with one persons review. One of the reasons I say that is because you don’t want to waist your money on a product/tool that is difficulty to use and or is not for you. With that said I personally believe that Curlformers can work on all hair types.

The price ranges from $50.00 – $80.00 depending on type of curl and length. Although they are a bit price for rollers, in my opinion they have been well worth the investment considering I’m not good at using flexi rods.  (I personally have a hard time getting to roots when using flexi rods compared to when I use curlformers.) Sleeping in Curlformers vs flexi rods can be uncomfortable for some, however for me it’s not too bad (yes I sleep in them).

Types of Curlformers  Curlformers

Curlformers can be used on just about all hair lengths including short natural hair. Be sure to consider the length of your hair once you’re ready to purchase. Curlformers come in multiple sizes including: Short & Wide: for typical curls on shorter hair. Short & Narrow: for ringlet curls on shorter hair. Long & Wide: for typical curls on up to shoulder length hair. Long & Narrow: for ringlet curls on up to shoulder length hair. Extra Long & Wide: for typical curls on longer than shoulder length hair. (Image Courtesy of Pinterest)

MY EXPERIENCE

NaturallyACT_1828 copy

Curlformers have been an great way for me to stretch my type 4 hair, I usually have a difficult time getting my roots with other rollers however with Curlformers I have not at that problem. There are many tutorials on Youtube that teach to twist your hair at the root before applying Curlformers. I have applied them both ways have not really noticed a major difference it’s all about personal preference.

My PROCESS

16771_10204455556687225_2349900522812611038_n

Once all that is completed I go over each section using my denman brush and apply SheaMoisture Coconut & Hibiscus Frizz-Free Curl Mousse then apply the Curlformer.

I do sleep on my Curlformers with on problem however you may find that to be uncomfortable do the tightness on your roots. If you don’t want to sleep with the Curlformers I recommend sitting under a hooded dryer or put them in the beginning of your day and don’t leave the house (unless you want to look odd in public) this is a good time to do some deep cleaning, catch up on the book or TV show.

MY results

535936_10204461484115407_2943286350534745933_n

I love love love my end results, my curls usually last about four days then I do a dry twist-out. The fact that I can get multiple styles out this makes me so happy. This is my absolute favorite stretched hairstye without heat or using low heat dryer.
