Benefits of Including Hot Oil Treatment to your Haircare Regimen

Natural and kinky hair are prone breakage due to becoming dull and brittle. Hot oil treatments can be beneficial because the nutrients in the oil penetrate the hair follicles. I try to do a hot oil treatment twice monthly. You can do them weekly depending on the needs of your hair and scalp. Routinely applying hot oil treatments can:

Helps to mend split ends. When the oil is hot (warm) it penetrates into hair and soaks into split ends helping to them smooth them down. Note: don’t do this in lieu of trimming your ends but this will simply help to keep your ends together until you’re able to get them trimmed. (Once the hair has split it was it they can’t unsplit.)

Reduces dandruff and helps with eczema. If you have scalp issues such as a flaky scalp, dandruff, and eczema; a Hot oil treatment before you shampoo can help prevent dandruff and dry scalp.

Improve nourishment of hair follicles. I like to do my hot oil treatments with a with a scalp massager. This helps to increase the blood circulation and the hot oil soothes and moisturizes the scalp. The nutrients from the oils provide nourishment from the outside in, increasing the blood flow and improving nourishment from inside out.

Prevent breakage. Consistently doing a hot oil treatment along with deep conditioning will help to strengthen your hair and intern prevent damage from heat, styling, and coloring. There are so many things we do in our hair care routines that cause damage and breakage.

Prevent frizz and add shine to the hair. Oil treatments can help reduce frizz and promote shine without weighing down the hair. My scalp tends to be dry so I have learned that doing a hot oil treatment frequently (twice a month) has helped my hair not be so dry brittle and reduces breakage. However, be careful not to over do treatments, too much of a good thing can be bad. When you over-saturate your hair with oils you can cause your hair to become greasy and weighed down.

DIY recipe for a hot oil treatment.

I love to make my own home treatments; however, a few times a year I go to a professional stylist. It’s nice to have someone else wash my hair every now and again. I suggest trying the Pumpkin Pie Hot Oil Treatment from CurlMix it’s a DIY (Do-It-Yourself) Box for Curly Hair which includes all natural ingredients, easy and expert-tested recipes which are then sent directly to your door for only $28 with my discount code:  NATURALLYACT

Tip: Apply the hot oil to the hair and massage it into the scalp with your fingertips or scalp massager as a pre-poo treatment. Apply a plastic cap for 15 to 20 minutes, or use hair steamer like a Q-Redew, then rinse hair thoroughly.

My top 5 Reasons You Should Steam Your Hair

aleka-c-thrash-00395I believe steam is a necessary part of the healthy hair journey to keep your coils and curls moisturized. Using steam on your hair simply means to add warm moisture to the hair strands without direct water. When I first went natural, I noticed that when I wanted to refresh an old twist out, all I had to do was use the steam after a warm shower. Now I use my Q-Redew (
Hand‑Held Hair Steamer).

Here are my top five reason why you should consider adding steam to your hair regimen.

img_10171. Helps Reduce Breakage:  When your hair is dry and brittle usually means that your hair is thirsty. Steam adds moisture and hydration making your hair supple, and healthy. (Steam will help with detangle that can also lead to less breakage! When the hair hydrated, you should experience less tangles and knots)

2. Lifts The Cuticle: The best way to get the most out of your product is absorption. Using warm steam helps to raise the your hair cuticle, and allows the ingredients from your products penetrate more effectively – Those with low porosity hair will benefit the most.

img_1022
3. Reduces Shrinkage:
If you are a natural who likes elongated curls. Use steam to stretch your hair and reduce shrinkage.

4. Refreshes Curls (Extending Hair Styles): This is my favorite reason to use steam. You can refresh your hairstyle without needing to start over; adding moisture without soaking the hair with water. (Especially beneficial in the winter you can add steam to an old twist-out or wash-n-go for a refreshed look or to detangle an old style and re-twist.)

img_07305. Promote hair growth: using steam can help with product buildup and dirt on the scalp; making wash day easier. When your scalp is clean your hair will be healthier and grow with less breakage. (I like to pre-poo ‘deep condition the hair prior to washing’  along with a shampoo brush the warmth from the steam, along with massaging the scalp which helps stimulate blood flow, aiding in hair growth.)

FAQ:

When and how often should you steam?

  • It’s a personal preference but a few factors to consider are:  > How dry your hair feels?  > How often you need to wash your hair? > How difficult and/or how easy it is for products to penetrate your hair strands.
    • I suggest starting with 1 or 2 times a week to see how your hair responds. You will be able to see and feel that your hair is hydrated when it doesn’t feel dry or look dull.
    • I also suggest using a handheld steamer when deep conditioning to help the products penetrate into the hair.

What steamer do you suggest using ?

How I maintained my Flat Ironed Type 4 Natural Hair

IMG_1351 (1)I don’t flat-iron my hair often, usually only once a year, mainly because I like the texture of my hair when it’s not straighten. A few benefits of flat-ironing is being able to see the ‘true length’ of your hair. Straightening your hair can also add versatility in your styling routine.

A few disadvantages of flat-ironing natural hair is that it may not revert back to your curls or kinky/coily hair as quickly. Also, it may be hard to maintain straighten hair during working-outs or when it rains. As a result, many naturals find that their flat ironed hair only lasts for a very short time. Here are a few ways I kept my type 4 hair straight for two weeks, now I could have kept it straight longer; however, I just wanted my kinky/coily hair back.

First Things First – Go To A Professional

Salon Visit

Yes! I suggest getting your hair done by a licensed professional. Many naturals are comfortable with doing there own hair; however, I believe it’s best in these circumstances. The concern with going to a professional is trust, especially with all the articles about salons and stylist sneaking relaxers in on clients shampoo. However, the results of having your hair flat-ironed by a professional will be a lot better.

Now if you are having a hard time finding a stylist you trust, or cannot afford to go to a salon. I suggest investing in a good professional flat iron, make sure it has heat control settings.

Preserving Your Flat-Ironed Hair

Some naturals like to wrap their to there hair; however, when I do this I found that my hair has no bounce it just lays flat. Personally, I do not enjoy when my hair just lays flat. To keep my hair straight with a added curls and no heat, I use flexirods and curlformers. I love how using these tools help keep my hair straight with some bounce, while adding loose waves for a full look.

Minimal Product Use

Kinky/coily type 4 hair requires lots and lots of moisture, I tend to use creams, butters, steam and oil. When my hair is straight using butters weighs it down and creams make it revert back to kinky/coils. In place of heavy products, I like to use light oils light oils such as grapeseed oil, jojoba oil, or sweet almond oil. I lightly coat my hands with oil and apply to my hair daily. Doing this helps prevent dryness without weighing the hair down my hair.

Another important factor to maintaining straight hair for an extended period of time is how you protect your hair when you sleep. Be sure to keep your hair protected while you sleep, use a satin/silk bonnet t or sleep on a satin/silk pillowcase.

Rain & Steam/Humidity

When my hair is in its natural state, I don’t worry about rain and humidity. The day I had my hair straightened it rain and rain. I kept a disposable shower cap in my bag and my umbrella to avoid the rain.  I usually don’t wear a shower cap; however, with straight hair is necessary.

Perserve With Ponytal

Working Out

Doing low intensity workouts will help minimize sweating be sure to use a sweatband during workouts. Sweatbands are a great way to keep your edges flat be sure your hair is completely dry before removing, if needed you can use handheld blow dryer on low cool-heat to make the process faster.

If you really want to get the most out of your flat-ironed, hair I suggest not to hang out at the pool or to the beach. If you do be sure to pin your hair up this will help extend the quality for your straighten hair.

Straight w Curls

Additional Info and suggestion :

I suggest using a Dri Sweat Edge Women’s Headband or Save Your Do Black GymWrap while working out to make your hair last. I don’t suggest strengthening your hair in the middle of summer when it’s most humid outside also when it’s hot you may be prone to sweat.
