img_8980

I first learned of EverButter at, ‘Embrace The Natural YouNatural Hair, Health & Beauty Expo last year. The Co-found Kummbareh Owens taught a session on hair care for children. In December 2015, I had the opportunity to try the Buttermint Smoothie Moisturizing Creme and was very pleased. I’m not sure why it took me so long to purchase the full line. The only item that was missing from this box was a scalp oil; however, EverButter has a Spring Sensation that can be purchased separately. Photo Credit: NaturallyACT

The Love Box comes in 3 sizes: small, large, and extra large and the price ranges from $25.00 – $105.00. As a blogger I am constantly investing and/or have products sent to me to try, so I chose to get the small Love Box. I should have gotten the large box. Photo Credit: NaturallyACT

HOW TO USE ROSEMARY ESSENTIAL OIL

In addition to simulating hair growth, rosemary is used to aid in digestion problems, including heartburn and more. Rosemary is used topically (applied to the skin) stimulating hair growth, treating circulation problems, toothache, a skin condition like eczema. Rosemary is an herb; the oil is extracted from the leaf and used to make essential oil.

Shampooing
Add rosemary essential oil to your shampoo or conditioner; use 2 drops of oil for every ounce of shampoo or conditioner.

Daily Scalp Simulation
As a daily massage to stimulate new growth, simply add two drops of rosemary oil to one ounce of carrier oil such as jojoba oil, grape seed oil, avocado oil etc.  Rub into the scalp for three minutes before showering.

Hot Oil Treatment:
Try a hot oil treatment weekly or monthly to help add moister, retain healthy hair & healthy scalp.

  • Mix three tablespoons of carrier such as jojoba oil, grape seed oil, or avocado oil and 5 drops of rosemary essential oil.
  • Mix carrier oil and rosemary essential oil in a small glass jar that can be sealed.
  • Place the jar in a bowl of boiled water until the oil is warm.
  • Gradually massage the entire amount using your fingertips into your dry scalp for several minutes.
  • *Be sure to apply blend down the length of your hair (scalp to the ends).
  • Wrap your hair with plastic wrap or plastic shower cap, and then cover it with a very warm damp old t-shirt.
  • When t-shit becomes cool replace with another warm shirt.
  • Leave the blend for at least 30-45 or overnight, however if you do this be sure to remove the plastic wrap and sleep with a dry t-shirt on your pillow to absorb the oil.
  • Rinse and lightly shampoo your hair with a gentle Sodium Chloride & Parabens free
  • Follow with favorite conditioner.

Where to Buy:
You’ll find dry rosemary leaves at your local grocery store or try one of these links: doTerra,  NOW Foods, Plant Therapy Essential Oils.

Retaining & Maintaining length tips for Natural 4C Hair

IMG_1731

I often get questions on how I maintain length and care for my hair. When I hear the same question more than twice it’s a good time to blog about it 😀 Let me start out by saying this it’s not always go to be easy yet you CAN grow your 4c/kinky Hair. There is no magic potion to growing your natural hair long; there is no magic oil or product to buy however I’ll say it again you CAN GROW LONG HAIR.

PATIENCE

Patience is the main way to really learn your hair, everyone will have different experiences and it’s not going to be easy. It’s going to take time to really learn how to take care of your hair and from my perspective hair changes constantly. Having a positive attitude even when the results are not great or what you expect is key.

One of my personal rules is to not style, wash and especially detangling when frustrated or tired. For some this may mean missing out on going to a movie for hanging out with friends so that you can really take the time to care for your hair. Your attitude and approach matters patience is a mindset. You thought process and feelings prior to any attempting hair care matters. Take it slow and pay attention to how your hair is responding to products, styling tools and the style itself.

LEARN TO LOVE YOUR HAIR

It took almost 4 years to really love my hair; for years after I went natural I felt ugly and hated that my hair didn’t look like my friend or my favorite YouTube natural. I had to stop hating my hair (myself) and start loving what my hair could and would do. I literally started treating my hair like silk, using products that work best for my hair, minimizing styling tools and the use of heat including the blow dryer and over stretching my hair.

That was the best thinking I could have done when I started loving my hair my attitude and perspective changed. The icing on the cake was people started giving me random complements.

HEALTHY LIFESTYLE ~ TAKE CARE OF YOURSELF

What you eat affects many things from your emotions, to your hair, to your skin and so on. A healthy lifestyle is a must if you want your hair to grow healthy and maintain any length. Thus if your diet, exercise and sleeping habits are poor your hair and the way you feel will be affected.

Don’t wait until you start experiencing scalp issues or hair loss. Quick fixes don’t offer long term results. True healing and restoration takes time real results has everything to do with what you eat and how active you are. Think about when you don’t feel good, I mean really don’t feel good…. after sitting for a long period of time or after you ate a horribly unbalanced meal.

I want to be honest exercising does not always initially feel good yet in my experience its better than getting up after sitting for a long period of time with stiff legs. The end result of a good run is a feeling of accomplishment and once your body looks the way you want it’s all worth the work. This is also true for you hair the process is not always easy but when your twist out is ‘everything’ or your fro is so big people think its fake it’s totally work the work.

LEAVE YOUR HAIR ALONE

One of the best lessons I have learned is to style my hair the walk away. This was difficult for me at first because I almost always think I can make the style better if I just do one (ten) more things yet I end up not liking the final result as much after messing with it too much. Believe it or not 4C hair is fragile, over manipulation causes breakage resulting in not getting that length you want.

Retaining length is difficult if it’s constantly being, pulled, tugged, separated, yanked or even over exposed to the harsh weather. Pay attention to what you’re doing, this will help you see how well your hair is responding to techniques and styles, ask yourself: Am I using too much product? Do I constantly find myself touching/playing in my hair? Leave your hair alone as much as you can and watch it flourish.

MOISTURIZE

Most people don’t understand the value of water not just on your hair this includes in your body yes drink water. Now when I say water this does not mean washing your hair to often (although it is very important to keep a clean scrap) simply misting your hair daily to keep it moisturize. You can do this a few differ ways, with a spray or using a hair steamer.

I tend to alternate using my spray bottle containing part water part Aloe Vera Juice and my Q-Redrew hand held steamer to prevent dryness. Dry hair becomes brittle and breaks, it is virtually impossible to retain length with broken hair. Build into your regular regime misting and/or steaming your hair especially the ends to maintain moisture. After I steam or mist my hair I like to use a oil mix of 1oz castor oil, 1 oz jojoba oil, ½ oz grapeseed oil, ½ oz olive oil to seal in the moister.

Deep conditioning with heat weekly or at least biweekly is a great way to moisturizing your hair. While using your favorite deep conditioner a steam or simply sit under the dryer.

MAINTAIN A CLEAN SCALP ESPECIALLY WHILE WEARING PROTECTIVE STYLES

One of the ways I do maintain a clean scalp while wear braids it to:

  • Get a cup or bowl with warm water and a little oil of your choice.
  • Sections hair,
  • Using an old t-shirt, dip it in the oil water & oil mix (be light with the water) and wipe your scalp just your scalp clean.
  • I sometimes use blow dryer on cool to dry my scalp before moving on to the next section.

Doing this allows me to maintain my protective without messing up that fresh look.

All of those are my truths and I think it is safe to say that most naturals would agree regardless of hair texture. Retaining and maintaining long healthy hair begins with your mindset and ends with hair care. Start to focus on the simple things, love, health, peace…. You will get the results you desire… In life & in your hair!!!

Curlformers on Natural 4B/4CHair

I like to use Curlformers to stretch my hair without using heat. (I do on rare occasion use minimum heat with my blow-dryer.) When I first used Curlformers the application/installation was a little challenging however once i got the first few in, it was pretty easy.

REALISTIC EXPECTATIONS

At my workshop Curly Conversation I talked about why its necessary  to do your research before purchasing any products or tools don’t just go with one persons review. One of the reasons I say that is because you don’t want to waist your money on a product/tool that is difficulty to use and or is not for you. With that said I personally believe that Curlformers can work on all hair types.

The price ranges from $50.00 – $80.00 depending on type of curl and length. Although they are a bit price for rollers, in my opinion they have been well worth the investment considering I’m not good at using flexi rods.  (I personally have a hard time getting to roots when using flexi rods compared to when I use curlformers.) Sleeping in Curlformers vs flexi rods can be uncomfortable for some, however for me it’s not too bad (yes I sleep in them).

Types of Curlformers  Curlformers

Curlformers can be used on just about all hair lengths including short natural hair. Be sure to consider the length of your hair once you’re ready to purchase. Curlformers come in multiple sizes including: Short & Wide: for typical curls on shorter hair. Short & Narrow: for ringlet curls on shorter hair. Long & Wide: for typical curls on up to shoulder length hair. Long & Narrow: for ringlet curls on up to shoulder length hair. Extra Long & Wide: for typical curls on longer than shoulder length hair. (Image Courtesy of Pinterest)

MY EXPERIENCE

NaturallyACT_1828 copy

Curlformers have been an great way for me to stretch my type 4 hair, I usually have a difficult time getting my roots with other rollers however with Curlformers I have not at that problem. There are many tutorials on Youtube that teach to twist your hair at the root before applying Curlformers. I have applied them both ways have not really noticed a major difference it’s all about personal preference.

My PROCESS

16771_10204455556687225_2349900522812611038_n

Once all that is completed I go over each section using my denman brush and apply SheaMoisture Coconut & Hibiscus Frizz-Free Curl Mousse then apply the Curlformer.

I do sleep on my Curlformers with on problem however you may find that to be uncomfortable do the tightness on your roots. If you don’t want to sleep with the Curlformers I recommend sitting under a hooded dryer or put them in the beginning of your day and don’t leave the house (unless you want to look odd in public) this is a good time to do some deep cleaning, catch up on the book or TV show.

MY results

535936_10204461484115407_2943286350534745933_n

I love love love my end results, my curls usually last about four days then I do a dry twist-out. The fact that I can get multiple styles out this makes me so happy. This is my absolute favorite stretched hairstye without heat or using low heat dryer.

My brief two part wash day regimen!

Wash Blog copy

I have two different wash day regimens; one is a co-wash using conditioner in place of shampoo the other is with shampoo. I like wash my hair every week (shampooing once a month) lately I have only had time to wash my hair every two weeks.

On shampoo days I like to do pre-condition and oil my scalp before I shampoo, yes this sounds a little backwards however I have high density hair and tend to style with heavy cream base products and pre-poo (poo – meaning washing before shampooing) helps get rid of dandruff and excess buildup.

Next I like to stimulate my scalp by using a Scalp Invigilator to help cleanse and exfoliate promote circulation to keep my scalp. I also to use the ‘Wash Rule’ simply shampoo and rinse three times.

I like to clarify my hair about every other month or when I feel my hair needs and extra cleansing. As a rinse I mix a half cup Apple Cider Vinegar with and one cup of water.

On co-wash days I like to use a cream conditioner, the process is smiler to the shampooing. I just simply wash my hair with conditioner instead of shampoo. When co-washing I usually do a wash and rinse twice the since its weekly, I have found that my hair feels more hydrated after I co-washing.

With every way I use my Scalp Invigilator it’s like getting a scalp massage every week.
