You Have What It Takes to Overcome Anxiety

Did you miss me? It’s been over a year since my last real post, I have allowed negative self-talk, doubt, and even fear to keep me from doing what I truly love. I have wanted to post for a while, in fact, I have written numerous blogs that I have yet to post. Why? Because I told myself no one cares about what you have to say, people only want to read about your natural hair journey. But, after an amazing weekend away I realized I do have something, I have to work on speaking life about me, even if one person reads this it’s totally worth it.

So for my first post back, I want to share how I have been dealing with anxiety. Since I was a child I would sit in my room and analyze everything that happened that day. Constantly asking myself questions: “Why did I say that?”, and, “Why did they respond to me like that?” I was convinced that everyone hated me. I was reminded of this when I read a post By Holly Riordan, entitled “My Anxiety Convinces Me That Everyone Hates Meby Holly Riordan Just about everything she said I could relate to.

My anxiety makes me question everything. When someone compliments me, I question if they are being honest. If someone tells me they love me it’s hard for me to believe them. I question everything, it’s hard for me to understand why they would want anything to do with someone like me.

Recently, a friend said to me “I don’t understand how you can be a negative person and a believer?”  This stopped me in my tracks, I had no response. I never thought that my anxiety reflected so poorly on my faith. I am still navigating how to reconcile my faith and letting go of my anxiety.

I wanted to share some of the lessons I have learned in dealing with my anxiety. Check out a few coping Strategies. Try these when you’re feeling anxious or stressed.

  • Take a time-out. Practice yoga, listen to music, meditate, get a massage, or learn relaxation techniques. Stepping back from the problem helps clear your head.
  • Eat well-balanced meals. Do not skip any meals. Do keep healthful, energy-boosting snacks on hand.
  • Limit alcohol and caffeine, which can aggravate anxiety and trigger panic attacks.
  • Get enough sleep. When stressed, your body needs additional sleep and rest.
  • Exercise daily to help you feel good and maintain your health. Check out the fitness tips below.
  • Take deep breaths. Inhale and exhale slowly.
  • Count to 10 slowly. Repeat, and count to 20 if necessary.
  • Do your best. Instead of aiming for perfection, which isn’t possible, be proud of however close you get.
  • Accept that you cannot control everything. Put your stress in perspective: Is it really as bad as you think?
  • Welcome humor. A good laugh goes a long way.
  • Maintain a positive attitude. Make an effort to replace negative thoughts with positive ones.
  • Get involved. Volunteer or find another way to be active in your community, which creates a support network and gives you a break from everyday stress.
  • Learn what triggers your anxiety. Is it work, family, school, or something else you can identify? Write in a journal when you’re feeling stressed or anxious, and look for a pattern.
  • Talk to someone. Tell friends and family you’re feeling overwhelmed, and let them know how they can help you. Talk to a physician or therapist for professional help!!!

I am still learning ways to overcome my own insecurities. This year I have been more intentional about managing my emotions. If you have tips to share I would love to hear then leave a comment below!

Benefits of Lavender Oil & How you can include it in your Hair Care Regimen

Lavender oil is one of my favorite essential oil because of its ability to calm. It’s often used in aromatherapy, known to help with stress, anxiety, acne, and even respiratory problems. Many don’t realize it also has great benefits for all hair types as well.

Let’s break down the benefits:

  • Lavender oil prevents hair shedding and improves blood circulation on the scalp which aids in hair growth.
    • Add Lavender essential oil to your deep conditioner for a nutrient boost.
    • For scalp massage, mix 8-10 drops in 2 Tbsp of warm extra virgin olive oil or coconut oil. Work it into the scalp with your fingers. I personally have used this as a pre-poo treatment, I leave it on my hair overnight to maximize its healing and nourishing properties while helping me sleep.
  • Lavender oil relieves stress providing restful sleep. You can cover your head with a head wrap or bonnet when you sleep, this makes a perfect overnight treatment be sure to wash your hair in the morning.

  • Do you suffer from an itchy, dry scalp? Lavender oil has powerful antiseptic qualities treating dry scalp, fungi, bacteria, and other microbes.
    • Massaging your scalp with a mix lavender oil can help.
  • Add few drops of lavender oil to any carrier oil like jojoba oil, coconut oil, or extra virgin olive oil. You can also add a few drops to your favorite shampoo, conditioner, or deep conditioner.
  • If you wear wigs try applying the lavender and coconut oil or jojoba oil-mix to your hair to help keep your scalp nourished underneath.

I believe Lavender oil is a must-have essential oil for improving your hair, skin, and overall health. Consider adding lavender oil to your daily regimen.

Disclaimer: Always dilute the essential oil with a carrier oil.

Benefits of Including Hot Oil Treatment to your Haircare Regimen

Natural and kinky hair are prone breakage due to becoming dull and brittle. Hot oil treatments can be beneficial because the nutrients in the oil penetrate the hair follicles. I try to do a hot oil treatment twice monthly. You can do them weekly depending on the needs of your hair and scalp. Routinely applying hot oil treatments can:

Helps to mend split ends. When the oil is hot (warm) it penetrates into hair and soaks into split ends helping to them smooth them down. Note: don’t do this in lieu of trimming your ends but this will simply help to keep your ends together until you’re able to get them trimmed. (Once the hair has split it was it they can’t unsplit.)

Reduces dandruff and helps with eczema. If you have scalp issues such as a flaky scalp, dandruff, and eczema; a Hot oil treatment before you shampoo can help prevent dandruff and dry scalp.

Improve nourishment of hair follicles. I like to do my hot oil treatments with a with a scalp massager. This helps to increase the blood circulation and the hot oil soothes and moisturizes the scalp. The nutrients from the oils provide nourishment from the outside in, increasing the blood flow and improving nourishment from inside out.

Prevent breakage. Consistently doing a hot oil treatment along with deep conditioning will help to strengthen your hair and intern prevent damage from heat, styling, and coloring. There are so many things we do in our hair care routines that cause damage and breakage.

Prevent frizz and add shine to the hair. Oil treatments can help reduce frizz and promote shine without weighing down the hair. My scalp tends to be dry so I have learned that doing a hot oil treatment frequently (twice a month) has helped my hair not be so dry brittle and reduces breakage. However, be careful not to over do treatments, too much of a good thing can be bad. When you over-saturate your hair with oils you can cause your hair to become greasy and weighed down.

DIY recipe for a hot oil treatment.

I love to make my own home treatments; however, a few times a year I go to a professional stylist. It’s nice to have someone else wash my hair every now and again. I suggest trying the Pumpkin Pie Hot Oil Treatment from CurlMix it’s a DIY (Do-It-Yourself) Box for Curly Hair which includes all natural ingredients, easy and expert-tested recipes which are then sent directly to your door for only $28 with my discount code:  NATURALLYACT

Tip: Apply the hot oil to the hair and massage it into the scalp with your fingertips or scalp massager as a pre-poo treatment. Apply a plastic cap for 15 to 20 minutes, or use hair steamer like a Q-Redew, then rinse hair thoroughly.

5 Reasons You Should Have An Essential Oil Diffuser

I am slowly seeking a more holistic and natural lifestyle; not just with my hair, I want an over all healthy lifestyle. After learning that oils like lavender help with sleeping and relaxation, I invested in an essential oil diffuser to get better rest better.

I have been using my essential oil diffuser for about 5 months now and I’ve learned how it improves my overall health as well as increases my energy. The list of all the possible uses for a diffuser is extensive. I wanted to share my top five reasons on why you should consider investing in an essential oil diffuser and use it every day.

1 – Rest and Relaxation

Essential oils are best known for their ability to help you relax and sleep. I suggest having a diffuser ready to go when you get home from work or after a long day. Keeping a diffuser near your bed will help your mind and body relax so you can sleep better {Recommended oils: chamomile and lavender.}

2 – distress

A diffuser can help you to distress and assist in improving your mood. Smell is the one of the strongest senses and can influence brain activity. When you’re feeling sad or depressed you can use your diffuser to enhance and inspire a positive mood.  {Recommended oils: sweet orange, jasmine, rose, sandalwood, and vanilla.}

3 – Helps Prevent Illness

Essential oils are known to be powerful antimicrobial (An antimicrobial is an agent that kills microorganisms or stop their growth) and when introduced into the air in vapor from, the organic compounds within the oils come into direct contact with airborne pathogens before they can invade your body. Secondly, essential oils can also be used to boost the immune system. Last but not least, some diffuser also double as humidifier which will help to keep your airways moist and healthy so you are less susceptible to any microbes (a microorganism, especially a bacterium causing disease or fermentation) that do make it into your body. {Recommended oils: tea tree, sage, rosemary, grapefruit, lemon, and thyme.

4 –Safer Alternative to Candles

Burning candles or incense can be a potentially hazardous especially if you have pets or small children due to the open flame. An essential oil diffuser allows you to reap many aromatherapy benefits – without the risk of burns, wax spills etc. {Recommended oils: Any/Personal Preference}

5 –Helps You Breathe Easier

I have learned that essential oils can help reduce inflammation and congestion to help you breathe better. During allergy season, I like to use eucalyptus oil and it has worked wonders for me. If you are prone to allergies, try diffusing essential oils in the room where you spend most time. {Recommended oils: Eucalyptus, peppermint, rosemary, or lemon.}

*The recommended oils are great for reducing inflammation and congestion in clogged airways to help you breathe more easily. If you are prone to allergies or other breathing disorders, try diffusing essential oils in the room (or rooms) of your home where you spend the most time. Just remember to keep a box of tissues handy as your nose and sinuses begin to open so you can also avoid that mad dash to the bathroom! {Recommended oils: peppermint, rosemary, lemon, and eucalyptus.}

Bonus:

So far we’ve covered my top five reasons that owning a diffuser is an investment in your health and well-being, but it’s more than just that. With all of the versatile uses for essential oil diffuser around the home which ultimately lead to less doctor visits, lower electric bills, fewer cups of coffee and better productivity; you will soon discover that this handy little device is a money-saver as well!

Aroma1 Diffuser & Humidifier

I use the Aroma1 Diffuser & Humidifier from Vanity Planet {Retail $60.00 /$30 during the Christmas sale.}

Aroma1 Diffuser & Humidifier is super quiet, almost silent. Personally, I don’t use the light feature; however, certain color like purple: uplift and encourage creativity and blue has calming and inspirational effects. Along with the light feature, the constant stream of essential oil infused in the air creates a peaceful and creative space.
