Benefits of Steam

IMG_2264There are so many amazing benefits to using steam in your natural hair journey. Steam helps to hydrate the hair, opens the cuticle for deep condition, makes detangling easier, reshape and refresh a style.

Personally I use The ‘Q-Redew Handheld Hair Steamer’. The Q-Redew is a great tool that gently disperses warm steam and temporarily opens the hair cuticle allowing moisture to penetrate the hair strands. Steam is great for all hair types as a ‘4c’ natural with low porosity hair I believe steam is a fantastic way to penetrate the hair making it more ‘manageable’.

Before investing in a hair steamer I used a spray bottle with water to safely manipulate my hair to avoid damage caused combing dry hair. However that meant leaving the house with wet hair in freezing weather and that’s not a great idea. When using steam in place of direct water the hair remains dry to the touch and eliminates the need to air dry wet hair.

Steaming Your Hair

Steaming your hair creates a humid environment this is so necessary especially harsh weather like the cold midwest/east coast and dry heat from the desert. Steam is necessary for adding moisture to natural dry air. Steaming helps to replenish the hair from day to day routines. The good thing about steaming is that it doesn’t have to be time consuming or done every day.  I had positive results when I decided to take the extra step and steam almost daily.

Increases Moisture Retention

Retaining moisture is crucial to accomplishing desired hair styles such as twist-outs, bantu-knot outs, roller sets and more. When your hair is moisturized you are able to get definition.

Enhanced Curls

Using moisture will reshape and boost your style. The best part is that using steam will not change the texture of your hair. When used correctly for no more than thirty minutes at a time your hair will look better and more healthy.

Strengthening Hair

Steaming your hair helps make your hair stronger and more elastic. Elasticity helps your healthy. Basically your curls will snap back to their original state after they are stretched because you’re not using direct heat like a blow dryer.

Refresh/Rejuvenate

Steaming allows you refresh your hair without saturating your hair in water. Using steam also opens the hair cuticle this is good for different reasons including during a deep conditioning treatment the product nutrients is able to get into the strands of the hair. The best part is that the steam allows all the  “good stuff” from your conditioner to really get in the hair.

Easier to Manage

A steamer makes the detangling process so much easier to complete. I have found that with that step becoming easier stretching your hair becomes a breeze as well, therefore cutting down on styling/detangling time during your wash days or styling moments. Best part… you get to use less product which will save you money in the long run.

Helps Promotes Growth

HELPS…. this is not a cure to making your hair grow. Steaming your natural hair promotes hair growth by adding the much needed moisture to your scalp and promotes healthy hair growth. Steam will help to increase the flow natural oil and added oil on your scalp. Adding the use of steam into your natural hair regimen will help you make your natural hair journey easier.
